The trek over the pass from St. Jean Pied-de-Port was grueling. The weather was terrible - rainy, foggy and very windy. As we neared the top we were nearly blown off the mountain as the trail turned into a muddy bog. But it was also delightful; I ended up hiking much of the way with a wonderful couple from Russian and Latvia. We were exhausted by the time we arrived in Roncesvalles - seven hours after we started.
Later that evening I attended the Pilgrim Mass at the 13th century Royal Collegiate Church of Roncesvalles built by King Sancho VII to support the pilgrims on their way to Compestela.
